Research Capacity Strengthening Programme

Strengthening Research, Transforming Health in Tanzania

REMODEL-TZ builds local expertise, infrastructure, and evidence to confront tuberculosis, multidrug-resistant TB, and emerging infectious diseases — turning research into better health outcomes for Tanzanian communities.

Who We Are

A Tanzanian-led research consortium built to close critical health gaps

REMODEL-TZ — the Research Capacity Strengthening Programme for Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases Control in Tanzania — was founded to grow local scientific leadership while directly tackling the country's most pressing infectious disease burdens, particularly tuberculosis and multidrug-resistant TB.

Supported by EDCTP-2, we bring together physicians, laboratory scientists, epidemiologists and health-systems researchers to design studies that are rigorous, ethical, and grounded in the realities of the communities we serve.

Recent workshop strengthens regional research capacity

Our team recently convened researchers, clinicians and public health officers from across Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam and Iringa for a hands-on workshop on molecular diagnostics and dual disease management for TB and diabetes.

Sessions covered protocol design, good clinical practice, and data quality — part of our ongoing commitment to building lasting research capacity within Tanzanian institutions.

What We Do

Core areas of research and service

Our work spans the full research pipeline — from molecular diagnostics to health-system integration — always anchored in evidence and community impact.

Dx

Molecular Diagnostics

Advancing fast, accurate detection of TB and drug-resistant strains to guide timely treatment decisions.

HS

Health Systems Research

Studying how care is delivered and identifying practical ways to strengthen weak points in the system.

CT

Clinical Trials & Studies

Running rigorous trials on MDR-TB regimens and HIV-related sepsis interventions.

CB

Capacity Building

Training the next generation of Tanzanian researchers through mentorship and postgraduate education.

CE

Community Engagement

Partnering with communities to raise awareness and ensure research reflects real patient needs.

IS

Innovative Solutions

Developing new diagnostic and treatment protocols suited to low-resource settings.

Our Vision

A Tanzania free from the burden of preventable infectious disease

We envision a future where robust local research capacity drives faster diagnoses, better treatments, and stronger health systems across Tanzania and the wider region.

Our Mission
  • Generate high-quality evidence on TB, MDR-TB and related infectious diseases.
  • Strengthen the skills and infrastructure of local research institutions.
  • Translate findings into policy and practice that improve patient care.
  • Foster ethical, collaborative, and community-centered research.
Our Objectives

Six commitments guiding our work

  1. Strengthen diagnostic capacity

Expand access to accurate, rapid molecular diagnostics for TB and MDR-TB in underserved regions.

  2. Advance clinical research

Lead hypothesis-driven clinical trials that generate evidence for better treatment regimens.

  3. Integrate health systems

Address the joint management of communicable and non-communicable diseases, such as TB and diabetes.

  4. Build local research capacity

Train physicians, scientists and health workers through postgraduate study and mentorship.

  5. Engage communities

Ensure research priorities and findings are shared with, and shaped by, the communities we work in.

  6. Influence policy

Translate research findings into actionable guidance for national and regional health policy.
